Insert task and recurring task

​​Insert task to a task list

On the View tab, click Gantt Chart.

In an empty Task Name field, type a task name and press ENTER or press the Down arrow key on your keyboard.

Insert a task between existing tasks

Select the row below where you want a new task to appear.

On the Task tab, click the top part of the Insert button.

A new task will be inserted having the title "<New Task >" and duration 1 day?.

Type the task name in the inserted row. The task IDs are automatically renumbered after you insert a task.

Adding a task is allowed only in Gantt Chart, Tracking Gant and Task Sheet views.

Note: Besides typing a name in a new row in grid or using the Insert button from the Task menu, you can also insert a single task by using the Insert key on your keyboard. Another alternative is to hover the mouse over the id of a task in the grid, use right click and select New Task from the contextual menu that appears.

The new task will be inserted above the selected task.


Create a recurring task

If a task repeats at set intervals, enter it as a recurring task. If it does not repeat at set intervals, enter it as a regular task every time that it occurs.

On the View tab, click Gantt Chart.

Select the row below where you want the recurring task to appear.

On the Task tab, click the bottom part of the Insert button and then click Recurring Task.

 A Recurring Task Information dialog will appear from where you can specify different information regarding your recurring task.

        In the Task Name box, type the task name.

        In the Duration box, type the duration of a single occurrence of the task.

        In the Recurrence pattern section, click Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly.

       Select the check box next to each day of the week that the task should occur.

       In the Start box, enter a start date and do one of the following:

            Select End after, and then type the number of occurrences for the task.

            Select End by, and then enter the date you want the recurring task to end.

        If you don't enter a date in the Start box, Project uses the project start date.

In the Calendar for scheduling this task section, select a resource calendar from the Calendar list to apply to the task. If you do not want to apply a calendar, select None.

When you insert a recurring task, the task IDs are automatically renumbered and a recurring task indicator Recurring task indicatorappears in the Indicators Indicator column heading column.​

There are three possible positions where you can insert a task in your project:

  • at the top of the tasks list in the Gantt grid
  • at the bottom of the tasks list in the Gantt grid   or
  • in the middle, relative to the selected task position: the task is inserted above the selected row

Note: During inserting tasks in your project, you can use Undo or Redo options from the Task menu if you want to go one step forward or backward relative to your recent changes.
